Australia spoilt Sachin Tendulkar's 400th one-day international celebrations with a thumping nine-wicket win in Vadodara.

The only thing that didn't go right for visiting captain Ricky Ponting was the toss as his side dominated the fifth match of the series from start to finish.

After choosing to bat first, India only posted a total of 148, mainly due to Mitchell Johnson's maiden ODI five-wicket haul.

Adam Gilchrist then rushed Australia to victory with a whirlwind 79 not out that featured seven fours and four sixes.

Shot out

The wicketkeeper had already played a starring role with the gloves, claiming six catches as the home side were shot out in less than 40 overs.

Tendulkar - who becomes the second man to play in 400 ODIs, following in the footsteps of Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya - top-scored with 47.

A disastrous start saw Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid depart in successive balls in the first over, India slumping to 43-5 on a pitch that looked perfect for batting.

Johnson did much of the damage, dismissing Yuvraj Singh, Robin Uthappa and Mahendra Dhoni on his way to finishing with figures of 5-26.

Even Tendulkar eventually succumbed under the pressure, edging an excellent away swinger from Brett Lee through to Gilchrist.

Only a last-wicket stand of 41 between Zaheer Khan (28) and RP Singh (12) added any respectability to the final score.

Cruise

However, the total was soon shown to be well below-par by Gilchrist, who shared two half century stands to see the Australians home inside 26 overs.

Not even the early introduction of spin pair Harbhajan Singh and Murali Kartik, or a groin injury sustained by Matthew Hayden, could stem the flow of runs.

After Hayden was bowled by RP Singh for 29, Ponting came in to make 39 not out and steer his team to a victory that puts them 3-1 up in the series with just two matches still to play.
