An explosive partnership of 131 between Dinesh Karthik and Rohit Sharma inspired Mumbai Indians to a 44-run win over Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.

After big-name opening pair Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar were both dismissed with just one run on the board, Karthik (86) and Sharma (74 not out) led a spectacular revival for the hosts in Mumbai.

The Indians finished their 20 overs on 209-5, with Delhi struggling to keep up with the daunting run rate as they managed just 165-9 in their innings.

David Warner top-scored with 61, while Mitchell Johnson, Pragyan Ojha and Kieron Pollard each took two wickets for Mumbai.

Victory looked far from assured when Mumbai lost two wickets in the first nine balls after winning the toss and electing to bat, Delhi skipper Mahela Jayawardene taking the catch to dismiss Ponting for a duck and also being responsible for the run out of Tendulkar (1).

But Karthik and Sharma were soon in full flow, the former hitting 14 fours as he reached his total off just 48 balls and the latter clobbering five sixes in his 50-ball innings.

Ambati Rayudu added 24 off just eight balls late on as Ashish Nehra's four overs went for 49 runs, although the seamer did take two wickets.

The Daredevils lost Unmukt Chand (0) and Jayawardene (3) early on before the big-hitting Warner and Manprit Juneja (49) kept them in with a shout.

But after those two were dismissed the innings fell apart and Mumbai were left to cruise to victory.
