Kent had to settle for a draw despite asking Hampshire to follow-on at the Rose Bowl.

Hampshire slumped from 130-5 in their first innings at the start of the final day to 215 all out by mid-afternoon.

Ryan McLaren claimed figures of 4-49 and Azhar Mahmood 3-21 to help secure a first-innings lead of 216. Robert Key enforced the follow-on under darkening skies.

Hampshire opening pair Michael Carberry (8no) and Michael Brown (21no) reached 33-0 in 12.5 overs before the rain arrived shortly after 4.00pm to end any prospect of a positive outcome.

Kent, who piled up 431-8 declared in their first innings after rain had washed out the entire opening day, claim 12 points from the draw. Hampshire take seven points and remain bottom of the Division One table.

Day three

Martin van Jaarsveld hit 133 to give Kent their first maximum batting bonus points of the season as they piled the pressure on Hampshire.

Kent captain Rob Key declared on 431-8 and his bowlers soon had Hampshire reeling as they finished day three on 130-5, however a draw stills seems the most likely result as too much time has already been lost to the weather.

After a delayed start Chris Tremlett and Shane Bond took the second new ball when play resumed but the pair were not the threat Hampshire hoped they would be.

Kent quickly went passed 300 in the LV County Championship for the first time in 2008 as they profited from wayward bowling from the Hampshire duo.

After reaching his first half-century of the season from just 59 balls, Justin Kemp pulled a short delivery from Tremlett to James Tomlinson.

Tomlinson then had centurion van Jaarsveld caught behind when the South African gloved an attempted pull shot.

Kent blasted 30 runs off the last three overs with new signing Azhar Mahmood the star with an unbeaten 42 from 46 balls and they declared when left-hander Ryan McLaren was caught behind for 13 just after lunch.

Hampshire's innings got off to a bad start when Mahmood trapped opener Michael Brown lbw for 20 in the 13th over and Jimmy Adams was out for nought after cutting McLaren straight to backward point to leave Hampshire reeling on 43-2.

Former England batsman John Crawley was out to a poor shot to Amjad Khan's first ball for just nine before former Kent batsmen Michael Carberry was trapped lbw for 32 by a well directed by Robert Joseph to leave Hampshire struggling on 71-4.

Hampshire captain Dimi Mascarenhas steadied the ship with a battling 30 from 39 balls.

Day two

Darren Stevens made the most of his luck after being dropped three times to hit 127 for Kent against Hampshire in their LV County Championship Division One clash at the Rose Bowl.

Martin van Jaarsveld also reached a century in the last over as Kent finished

on a respectable 294-4 after Hampshire had won the toss.

After the first day was lost to rain, play did not get under way on day two until 12.30, but Kent capitalised on the time they had available.

Shane Bond made an instant breakthrough for Hampshire, having Joe Denly caught at second slip by James Adams with only two on the board.

James Tredwell then departed lbw to James Tomlinson for 15 and captain Rob Key was dismissed by Chris Tremlett soon after lunch for 21.

At 44-3 Kent were in some difficulty but Stevens joined Van Jaarsveld

in a stand of 210 in 55 overs for the fourth wicket.

Stevens was dropped at four at slip by Michael Lumb, at five in the gully by

Michael Brown, and at 51 by Adams at second slip.

He went on to make 127 before attempting to cut spinner Greg Lamb and being snapped up at the wicket by Tom Burrows.

Day one

Hampshire and Kent were left frustrated by bad weather at The Rose Bowl as day one of their fixture was abandoned without a ball bowled.

Heavy overnight rain had left pools of water on the outfield and although the morning was dry there was no way play could start.

Umpires Jeremy Lloyds and John Holder made two inspections, the last at 1.30pm, but had no other option but to call it off.
