Essex (22pts) beat Derbyshire (5pts) by 145 runs

Ryan ten Doeschate took three wickets on the final morning to help Essex seal a 145-run victory over Derbyshire.

The Dutch all-rounder ran through the lower order after Derbyshire resumed on 188-5 in pursuit of a target of 372.

His medium pace removed Greg Smith (11), James Pipe (6) and Graham Wagg (0) for figures of 4-29 as Derbyshire slumped to 226 all out.

Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria (3-54) had chipped in with the scalp of Jake Needham (1) and the result was completed with the run out of Charl Langeveldt (12) by man-of-the-moment ten Doeschate.

Day Three

Essex picked up two key wickets towards the end of day three to put themselves in pole position against Derbyshire, who closed on 188-5.

Set a victory target of 372, the visitors looked on course for an unlikely win when Dominic Telo and Rikki Clarke were at the crease.

The pair put on an entertaining partnership of 87 for the fourth wicket before both batsmen were dismissed in the space of four deliveries.

Telo was the first to go for 69 off the bowling of Danish Kaneria and skipper Clarke followed in the next over thanks to a stunning catch from wicketkeeper James Foster stood up to the medium pace of Ryan ten Doeschate.

The Dutch all-rounder had already played his part with the bat earlier in the day, following up his first-innings century with an unbeaten 55.

His 73-ball knock saw him hit one six and six fours but he was left stranded as Graham Wagg and Charl Langevelt quickly wrapped up Essex's innings on 238 to finish with four wickets apiece.

Day Two

Ravi Bopara claimed four wickets in nine balls as Essex finished the day with a 192-run lead in their clash with Derbyshire at Chelmsford.

The four wickets came at a cost of just three runs as the visitors were bowled out for 271 in response to Essex's total of 404.

James Pipe was left unbeaten on 95 as Bopara ensured he missed out on a century, but his positive attitude allied to Greg Smith's more cautious approach saw them add 140 in 33 overs for the sixth wicket.

Smith went on to make 53 from 106 deliveries, seven of which he despatched to the boundary, before leg spinner Kaneria had him caught by Ryan ten Doeschate in the same position.

Smith's departure paved the way for Bopara to make his dramatic impact. He dismissed Jon Clare, Graham Wagg, Jake Needham and Charl Langeveldt for ducks.

Bopara had 4-33 from seven overs while Kaneria provided the main backup support with three for 58 from 20 overs.

Essex' second innings got off to a bad start, losing their first three wickets for 34.

Among them was England opener Alastair Cook whose unsightly swish against Langeveldt at a rising ball outside his off-stump ended up in the hands of Rikki Clarke at second slip.

But Bopara steered clear of such an indiscretion and will resume in the morning on 32.

Day One

Essex's England internationals endured a day of mixed fortunes against Derbyshire before Ryan ten Doeschate hit a century to help the hosts get up to 365-7.

Alastair Cook just missed out on his first century of the summer after seeing international colleague Ravi Bopara fall for just seven in the morning session.

After choosing to bat first, Essex lost their first three wickets for just 42 before left-hander Cook and captain Mark Pettini (40) steadied the ship with a stand of 81.

However, Derbyshire's bowlers refused to be dominated and once Cook departed to the bowling of Jake Needham for 95, the home side soon slipped to 239-7.

It was then that ten Doeschate came to the rescue, the Dutchman hitting 17 fours and a six in his impressive knock of 118 not out from 144 balls.

He was given excellent support by Alex Tudor, who contributed 53 in an unbroken eighth-wicket alliance of 126 that put Essex in sight of maximum batting points in their first innings.
