Murray Goodwin hit the final ball for six to break Nottinghamshire's hearts and clinch the NatWest Pro40 Division One title for Sussex.

The former Zimbabwe international smashed Charlie Shreck over long-on to seal a remarkable victory for the Sharks after they had at one stage looked down and out in their run chase.

However the drama was not just confined to the action on the field, with Sussex captain Chris Adams announcing at the presentation ceremony that he was standing down at the end of the season.

Final flourish

After 11 years in charge at Hove the 38-year-old will hand the leadership duties over to Michael Yardy having ended his reign on yet another high.

Chasing 227 in the winner-takes-all clash at Trent Bridge, the visitors looked set to suffer a heavy defeat when they slumped to 130-8.

Although Yardy managed 53 off 51 balls Sussex's top order failed to fire - England duo Matt Prior and Luke Wright combining for just 14 runs.

Skipper Adams' 24 took 46 deliveries to make and when he was bowled through the gate by Graeme Swann, who also dismissed the dangerous Dwayne Smith cheaply, the Sharks appeared to be sunk.

Goodwin was still at the crease though and just as it appeared the game was up he found an able ally in Mohammad Sami, who finished up unbeaten on 32 from 25 balls.

The pair put on a ninth-wicket stand of 99 in just 10 overs, the climax coming with Goodwin's towering maximum that sparked scenes of celebration on the players' balcony.

Nail-biter

Nottinghamshire, who had also lost a nail-biter to Lancashire on home soil earlier in the week, will wonder just how they failed to to win their first one-day trophy in 19 years having posted 226-7 after choosing to bat first.

Although they lost Swann and Mark Wagh with only 19 on the board Samit Patel steadied the ship with a classy knock of 78 that included five fours and two sixes.

He received excellent support from overseas star Ashwell Prince (33) in a fourth-wicket partnership of 82 before Chris Read came in at number six to hit 31 not out in the closing overs.

Andre Adams crashed two sixes to make 16 not out, though in the end it was not enough as the Outlaws were robbed right at the death.
