Sangakkara: Match-winning 101
Asia Cup - Group A
Lahore
Sri Lanka 357-9 Innings Complete (K C Sangakkara 101, C K Kapugedera 74, S T Jayasuriya 72) v Bangladesh 226-7 Innings Complete
Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 131 runs
Kumar Sangakkara struck a superb 101 to help Sri Lanka power past Bangladesh by 131 runs in their Group A Asia Cup match in Lahore.
The classy gloveman notched his seventh one-day hundred to propel the defending champions to a mammoth 357-9 in their 50 overs before restricting Bangladesh to 226-7 in their allocation.
Bangladesh were never on target after losing opener Nazimuddin (1) and captain Mohammad Ashraful (8) by the 10th over. Only Mushfiqur Rahim (44) and Raqibul Hasan (35) offered some resistance during their fourth wicket 78-run stand in an otherwise disappointing batting display.
Sri Lanka, who won the toss and batted, were indebted to openers Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya - who made 72 in a rapid 116 partnership inside 15 overs.
Sangakkara hit 16 boundaries during his 91-ball knock as he and Jayasuriya went on the rampage right from the word go.
Left-arm spinner Abdur Razak ended Jayasuriya's innings, bowling him with a straighter one but Chamara Kapugedera carried on the momentum with a breezy 74 from 67 balls.
Kapugedera and Chamara Silva (19) added 53 more runs for the fourth wicket before Bangladesh stopped the run rampage, taking three wickets in the space of 33 runs.
The Tigers' chase stuttered after Tamim Iqbal (28), Nazimuddin and skipper Ashraful fell early.
Rahim and Hasan provided a brief fightback before Mashrafe Mortaza (34) and Abdur Razzak (22) added 49 for the unbroken eighth wicket stand.
Sri Lanka play United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Thursday to decide who tops the Group.
