South Africa beat Bangladesh by an innings and 129 runs

Fast bowler Dale Steyn returned figures of five for 63 as South Africa slammed Bangladesh by an innings and 129 runs in the first of two Tests between the sides.

Rain had curtailed the previous day's action with the tourists on 67 for three in the follow-on, still 221 runs short of making the Proteas bat again.

But Bangladesh never looked like reaching their first objective, with captain Mohammad Ashraful falling early on when he edged a rising ball from Makhaya Ntini to Neil McKenzie in the gully.

Shakib Al Hasan went in the next over for a duck, Steyn inducing an edge to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher as the tourists slipped to 81 for five.

That soon became six when Mushfiqur Rahim, who had faced just two balls, was run out by Mehrab Hossain jnr as he attempted a quick single, Ashwell Prince doing the good work in the covers.

Naeem Islam made just three before he nicked another delivery from Steyn to Boucher, and Mashrafe Mortaza succumbed four overs later when he was unable to deal with Steyn's pace.

That left the Tigers at 108 for eight, but Mehrab (43 not out) and Shahadat Hossain (16) then launched a mini-revival to take the score on to 152 for nine.

But Steyn removed Shahadat's off stump to clinch his ninth five-wicket haul in Tests and Mahbubul Alam was the last man to perish, for a duck, as he holed out to Prince off Jacques Kallis, as Bangladesh were all out for 159.

"Makhaya's action looked really good, his energy is back and there was always something happening with the ball - lots of pace and bounce," said South Africa skipper Graeme Smith.

"It was Dale's first Test in a long time so the time in his legs will be crucial. He had some good spells and will only get stronger and stronger."

The second Test takes place in Centurion, starting on November 26.
