Surrey 186-1 (U Afzaal 98 no, M R Ramprakash 61 no) v Middlesex 129-7
Surrey beat Middlesex by 57 runs
Middlesex suffered a losing start in their defence of the Twenty20 Cup, going down by 57 runs to London neighbours Surrey at Lord's.
The weakened Panthers, missing several key players who helped them to glory in 2008, were punished by the Brown Caps' batsmen.
Stand-in skipper Usman Afzaal smashed 98 not out - the highest score by a Surrey player in the competition - to help his side post 186-1.
The left-hander hammered eight fours and two sixes in his thrilling 59-ball knock, combining with Mark Ramprakash (61 not out) to put on 139.
The unbeaten second-wicket stand came after the departure of Scott Newman for 18, Chris Silverwood claiming the only breakthrough.
Knowing a record run chase was required, Middlesex failed to get off to a flying start and were always well behind, ending up well short on 129-7.
Tyron Henderson, who only arrived in the country earlier on Monday, top-scored with 32 from 23 deliveries. Ben Scott was 22 not out at the finish.
However Chris Schofield made sure the visitors were always in control, the former Lancashire leg spinner picking up 3-21 from his four overs.
