Ramprakash: Innings not enough
Twenty20 Cup South Division, Rose Bowl
Hampshire 191-6 (MJ Lumb 54) beat Surrey 173-8 (MR Ramprakash 73) by 18 runs
Hampshire condemned Surrey to an 18-run defeat in their Twenty20 Cup South Division clash at the Rose Bowl.
A defiant innings of 73 from Mark Ramprakash was not enough to save Surrey, who fell short in their chase of the Hawks' total of 191 for six.
The former England batsman hit two sixes and five fours in a 47-ball innings before being caught by Imran Tahir at backward square leg.
Michael Lumb (54) and James Adams (44) got Hampshire off to a dominant start with an opening stand of 92 in only nine overs.
However, both Lumb and Adams were run out by Jade Dernbach as their side's challenge was given a temporary setback.
Nic Pothas made a quick-fire 24 at the end of the innings as Surrey bowlers Dernbach and Andre Nel both suffered extremely expensive overs.
Surrey struggled with the required run-rate from the start, Scott Newman making a brisk 26 before being run out by a direct throw from Michael Carberry.
Ramprakash and Grant Elliott (26) kept Surrey's hopes alive with a stand of 46 in four overs, before Elliott carelessly reverse swept Tahir to Carberry at point.
Ramprakash continued to attack, hitting Liam Dawson and Billy Taylor for six and Hampshire had an awkward moment when Hamza Riazuddin conceded 16 off the 15th over.
However, once the 39-year-old had been dismissed, Hampshire held on easily for their second win in four matches in the competition.
