Ervine: All-round contribution
Twenty20 Cup - South Division
Chelmsford
Essex 149-6 v Hampshire 153-4
Hampshire beat Essex by 6 wkts
Hampshire clinched their first ever Twenty20 Cup win over Essex at Chelmsford to pip their hosts for a place in the quarter-final draw.
The Hawks became just the sixth visiting team to triumph at the Eagles' home when Sean Ervine hammered the first ball of the 20th over for six.
The former Zimbabwe all-rounder finished on 39 not out from just 22 balls, with Dimi Mascarenhas at the other end unbeaten on 27.
The pair had also starred with the ball as Essex were restricted to 149-6, Graham Napier top-scoring with 47.
The all-rounder was forced to play a lone hand at the top of the order after the home team at one stage slipped to 39-3, Mascarenhas picking up 2-14 from his four overs.
Ervine eventually removed Napier on his way to figures of 3-26, though some clean hitting from Ryan ten Doeschate, who made 43 from 22 deliveries, gave the Eagles some hope at the halfway stage.
In-form Michael Lumb made 26 at the top of the order to get Hampshire's reply off to a positive start before they lost their way against the home spinners.
Grant Flower picked up 3-25 to put the game back in the balance - despite Michael Carberry making 39 from number three.
However, Ervine held the Hawks together - helping take 14 off one Napier over - to make sure his side would finish runners-up in the South Division behind winners Kent. They will travel to Northamptonshire in the next round.
