Indian Premier League
Eden Gardens, Kolkata
The Mumbai Indians chased down a target of 138 to beat the Kolkata Knight Riders by seven wickets and secure their first win in the Indian Premier League.
Robin Uthappa and Dwayne Bravo came together with the Indians in trouble at 25-3 after the top three - Ajinkya Rahane (4), Sanath Jayasuriya (18) and Manish Pandey (0) - had all fallen within the first 25 balls of the innings.
The fourth-wicket pair shared an unbroken stand of 113 to see Mumbai to a welcome victory with eight balls to spare. Bravo finished with 64 not out from 53 balls, while Uthappa's 37 at exactly a run-a-ball anchored the chase.
Earlier, Knight Riders skipper Sourav Ganguly elected to bat first in front of his adoring home crowd at Eden Gardens.
But Shaun Pollock claimed the scalps of Ganguly (4) and Brendon McCullum(1) with the third and fifth deliveries of the game to set the tone for a dominant display from the visting bowlers.
Pollock (2-27) is leading the Mumbai franchise in the absence of Sachin Tendulkar due to injury and Harbhajan Singh, who has been suspended for 11 matches for slapping Shantha Sreesanth at the conclusion last Friday's match against the Kings XI Punjab.
Laxmi Shukla's unbeaten 40 guided the Knight Riders to a disappointing total of 137-8. Jayasuriya scalped 3-14 with his low-flighted left-arm spin.
