Indian Premier League
Punjab Cricket Assocn. Stadium, Mohali
The Kings XI Punjab rounded off the group stage of the Indian Premier League with a 41-run success over the Rajasthan Royals in Mohali.
Shaun Marsh blasted 115 off 69 balls to lead the Kings XI to a total of 221-3 after they were asked to bat by Royals skipper Shane Watson, filling in for regular captain Shane Warne, who was rested.
Marsh shared an opening partnership of 133 with James Hopes (51 off 35 balls) and 80 with Yuvraj Singh (49 off 16 balls) for the second wicket.
The 24-year-old left-hander, son of former Australian Test opener Geoff Marsh, is the leading run scorer in the competition with 593 runs at an average of 74.12.
And his innings was also enough to put the game beyond the reach of the Royals, who finished well short at 180-7 in reply.
Opening batsman Niraj Patel contributed a 39-ball innings of 57 but the required rate spiralled out of control against some disciplined bowling from the Kings XI, led by leg-spinner Piyush Chawla's 3-35.
The two teams had already reached the last four prior to this match. The result does not prevent Rajasthan finishing top of the standings with 22 points, while the Kings XI are two points behind in second.
The Royals meet the Delhi Daredevils in the first semi-final on Friday with the Kings XI facing the Chennai Super Kings the following day. Both games takes place at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
