New Zealand beat Pakistan by 32 runs
Returning paceman Shane Bond produced a match-winning performance as New Zealand scored a 32-run victory against Pakistan in the first Test in Dunedin.
Having been absent from the Black Caps' Test line-up for more than two years, Bond took 3-46 on Saturday to follow up the five-wicket haul he claimed in the first innings as the home side recorded their first five-day win in over a year.
On a day which saw the fortunes of both sides ebb and flow, Bond again claimed the scalp of 19-year-old Umar Akmal - a match-turning wicket as Pakistan chased their target of 251.
Iain O'Brien also claimed two late wickets in two overs to give the home side further momentum, before captain Daniel Vettori claimed last man Mohammad Aamer to seal victory.
The final day started with New Zealand adding just six runs to their overnight total of 147 for the loss of two wickets. However, Pakistan's batsmen were soon faring far worse and they were reduced to 24-3 inside the first 11 overs.
But a composed half-century from Umar to follow up his maiden hundred on his Test debut swung the momentum back the way of the tourists.
His 71-run stand with captain Mohammad Yousuf brought Pakistan back from the brink and, although Yousuf departed for 41 after lunch, Shoaib Malik joined Umar to make further gains.
Their partnership yielded 66 runs but was broken five minutes before tea when Malik top-edged to Brendon McCullum off O'Brien.
That left Pakistan at 165-5 at tea, needing 86 runs to win in the final session.
With Kamran Akmal now joining his brother, Pakistan must have held hopes the pair could repeat the 176-run stand they produced in the first innings.
However, when Umar (75) was caught and bowled by Bond, Pakistan still required another 56 runs and Kamran (27) went just five balls later.
Their departures meant the match swung back New Zealand's way, with their bowlers then rallying for one final match-winning effort.
Bond had earlier struck twice with the new ball to reduce Pakistan to 53-3 at lunch.
Khurram Manzoor (4) was the first to go after edging behind to McCullum, who made a brilliant diving one-handed catch.
Chris Martin claimed Imran Farhat (1) six balls later when the opener prodded one towards Tim McIntosh who went low to take the catch at second slip.
Bond then got Fawad Alam to balloon one to Peter Fulton at silly mid-on, and New Zealand were in the driving seat.
But Yousuf and Umar brought some stability to their faltering innings, the pair playing conservatively at first before the latter in particular opened up after lunch.
Umar hit four boundaries and also hit Vettori for six before bringing up his fifty, from 112 balls, just after the mid-session drinks break.
Malik escaped four overs later when, having made six runs, he drove the ball straight back at Grant Elliott - a chance the latter should really have taken.
The right-hander made the most of his second life adding 26 more runs, before the hard-working O'Brien claimed his first scalp of the match.
By tea Umar was unbeaten on 66 with his elder sibling four not out; however, the final session was New Zealand's.
It began with Bond snaring Umar before Kamran was trapped lbw by O'Brien - a decision confirmed by a third umpire review - before he had Umar Gul caught by Vettori at mid-off in his next over.
Asif was then caught by Taylor at first slip off Vettori, before the New Zealand skipper caught and bowled Aamer (15) to seal the win.
O'Brien finished the innings with 3-63, while Martin got 2-45 to go with his 3-63 from the first innings.
At the start of the day, Gul (3-41) claimed the last two wickets to dismiss New Zealand for 153 in their second innings.
O'Brien failed to add to his tally of four when he was trapped lbw, while Elliott (25) followed two overs later after edging Gul to wicketkeeper Kamran.
