Sussex wasted little time completing a 10-wicket victory over Surrey on the final morning at Hove.

Resuming at 243-9 in their second innings, Surrey failed to add to their total before last man Jade Dernbach (1) was caught by Michael Yardy off Monty Panesar's (2-54) bowling in the second over of the day.

That left Sussex to chase a target of 33, which opening pair Yardy (17no) and Chris Nash (12no) achieved in 6.4 overs.

Sussex, relegated last year, have made a superb start to life in Division Two with two wins in a row, while Surrey - under the guidance of new captain Rory Hamilton-Brown - have lost their opening two matches.

To make matters worse, Hamilton-Brown, who controversially rejoined the south Londoners from Sussex during the winter, left the ground on crutches.

He suffered bad bruising to the top of his left foot when he was hit by a Luke Wright yorker on the third day, although he expects to be fit in time for Surrey's next Championship game against Worcestershire, starting on April 21.

Day three

Luke Wright underlined his potential as a future England all-rounder with three key wickets as Sussex closed in on victory over Surrey at Hove.

Wright removed Mark Ramprakash, who has scored 10 of his 109 first-class hundreds against Sussex, for 14 and then returned later on the third day to pick up the wickets of Steve Davies and Usman Afzaal in successive overs.

The pair were threatening to drag Surrey back into contention during a stand of 138 for the fourth wicket after the visitors, who began their second innings 211 runs behind, had staggered to 35 for three.

Sussex claimed the extra half-hour in an effort to finish Surrey off inside three days and Monty Panesar picked up Chris Schofield leg before to reward an excellent spell by the left-arm spinner, after Schofield and Rao Iftikhar had survived for eight overs.

Surrey closed on 243 for nine, a lead of just 32, and Sussex should wrap up their second successive Championship victory at some stage on Sunday.

Earlier, Sussex had extended their overnight first-innings lead of 73 to 211, with Robin Martin-Jenkins' fine knock of 64 including nine boundaries.

Day two

Sussex's batsmen took over following the excellent opening-day performance of their seam attack, as the home side assumed control of their Division Two match against Surrey at Hove.

Murray Goodwin hit a stylish 74 while captain Michael Yardy and Luke Wright both made half-centuries as Sussex overcame a slow start to reach 278-7, a lead of 73, on a desperately slow pitch.

They managed only 26 runs in the first 20 overs but having lost both Joe Gatting and Chris Nash, Yardy and Goodwin put on 117 runs in a third-wicket stand lasting 33 overs - the former rather more circumspect in reaching 50 than his in-form partner.

Yardy fell after tea, with Wright then adding 63 off 68 balls - including a six off Gareth Batty, who had earlier claimed the wicket of Goodwin - as he, like his skipper, prepared for England duty in the forthcoming Twenty20 World Cup.

Earlier, Sussex had wrapped up Surrey's first innings in the space of 19 balls - including two wickets for Rana Naved with the first two balls of the day - as they were bowled out for 205, with Robin Martin-Jenkins eventually claiming 5-45.

Day one

Four wickets for Robin Martin-Jenkins restricted Surrey to 199-7 at the end of the first day of action against Sussex at Hove.

The hosts won the toss and put Surrey in to bat first, and that move paid off with the early wicket of Matthew Spriegel - who was caught behind off Rana Naved with the score on just six.

Arul Harinath held the innings together as Mark Ramprakash (five) and Usman Afzaal (nought) both fell to martin-Jenkins to leave the visitors languishing on 15-3.

Harinath and Rory Hamilton-Brown added 65 before Rana struck again, but Harinath added two further fifty partnerships with Gareth batty and Chris Schofield before he fell for 62, again to Martin-Jenkins.

Andre Nell joined Schofield, unbeaten on 44, to see the game out to the close with Sussex gaining the early advantage on day one.
