Adams: Efforts in vain
Jimmy Adams battled his way to 194 but could not prevent Hampshire from slipping to a nail-biting three-wicket defeat to Lancashire in Liverpool.
The left-hander resumed the final day on 109 and would eventually go on to spend 10 hours and 35 minutes at the crease - the longest innings of the summer so far.
But the relegation-threatened visitors were eventually dismissed for 405 and Lancashire, chasing 168 to win, just did enough to get across the line.
Left-arm swing bowler James Tomlinson (3-27) gave Hampshire a sniff of an unlikely victory as he ripped trough the top order to reduce the hosts to 17-3.
But West Indian star Shivnarine Chanderpaul came to Lancashire's rescue, contributing 51 to the chase before being caught behind off the bowling of Chris Wood (3-32).
Gareth Cross (26) and Sajid Mahmood (24) provided the required support and impetus to take their side to the brink of victory, with Mark Chilton scoring the winning runs with one ball to spare.
Earlier, Hampshire had fought on after resuming on 275-5 as they tried to avoid what had seemed an almost certain defeat.
Adams eventually faced 507 balls and shared a last-wicket stand of 88 with Danny Briggs, who made 15 off 97. Tom Smith finished with career-best figures of 6-94.
Day Three
Jimmy Adams made a second successive century as he batted throughout day three to hold up Lancashire's charge to victory at Liverpool.
Adams backed up his hundred against Yorkshire by making 109 not out off 283 balls as Hampshire reached 275-5 to overcome a first-innings deficit of 238 and lead by 37 at stumps.
Left-handed Adams and Michael Carberry resumed on 15-0 but partnerships of 73 inside 31 overs between Adams and Neil McKenzie for the third wicket and 78 inside 24 for the fifth with Sean Ervine held the hosts up.
Carberry was first to go when he fell trying to pull Kyle Hogg, while Phil Hughes - called into the Australian squad for next month's tour of India - looked uncomfortable as he made only 12 before he was caught at first slip off the bowling of Gary Keedy.
McKenzie edged Smith behind for 31 off 111 balls and when James Vince saw his off stump travel five balls later, Hampshire were 140-4 in the 61st over.
But Adams kept plugging away, while Lancashire were a bowler light due to Glen Chapple's calf strain, and he reached three figures off 273 balls as Hampshire moved ahead. Wicketkeeper Michael Bates will join him at the crease in the morning on 27 not out.
Day Two
Lancashire's lower-order batsmen, led by Kyle Hogg, put them in control of the LV County Championship fixture against Hampshire on day two at Liverpool.
Resuming on 124-2, the home side lost three early wickets, including lynchpin Shivnarine Chanderpaul run out for 38, to slip to 144-5 in response to Hampshire's first-innings effort of 160.
But Gareth Cross (44), Sajid Mahmood (47) and Hogg (81) starred during a tail-end rally that got Lancashire up to 398 all out shortly before the close.
Michael Carberry (3no) and Jimmy Adams (11no) survived seven overs through to stumps to leave Hampshire at 15-0, trailing by 223 overall.
Day one
Lancashire finished day one at Liverpool only 36 runs behind with eight first innings wickets in hand after dismissing Hampshire for a lowly 160.
Kyle Hogg claimed figures of 4-53 and Tom Smith also chipped in with three wickets before the hosts reached 124-2 in reply before the close of play.
Hampshire had made a promising start after Lancashire had put them in to bat, with Michael Carberry (30) and Australian Phil Hughes (21) putting early runs on the board.
But when Carberry was caught behind by Gareth Cross off the bowling of Hogg the wickets began to tumble in dramatic fashion.
Seam duo Smith (3-40) and Hogg combined to take five wickets for the loss of only one run as the visitors lurched to 63-6 before skipper Dominic Cork (24) and Chris Wood (35) steadied the ship somewhat.
But the damage had already been done and the low total immediately put Hampshire on the back foot in the contest, although Cork did manage to trap Paul Horton for a duck in the third over of Lancashire's response.
Karl Brown followed after making 21 before Mark Chilton (47no) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (26no) closed out the day with an unbroken stand of 75.
