Bairstow: celebrates Yorkshire's victory
Yorkshire blew the race for the Division One title wide open with a nervy five-wicket victory over table-toppers Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.
Jonathan Bairstow hit an unbeaten 63, his seventh first-class half-century of the campaign, to steer the Tykes to a victory target of 209 during the third afternoon of the crunch LV= County Championship clash.
The 20-year-old put on a crucial partnership worth 97 with Gerard Brophy (41) after Yorkshire had suffered a mid-innings collapse, slipping from 70 without loss to 94-5.
Darren Pattinson picked up three quick wickets - including opener Adam Lyth for 45 - as Nottinghamshire sensed a chance of an unlikely victory.
However it was not to be, meaning Chris Read's side now look certain to go into the final round of fixtures with only a two-point cushion over Somerset, while Yorkshire are seven adrift in third place.
The hosts would have hoped to have set their opponents a bigger total to chase, but slipped from 357-6 to 413 all out in the morning session. Seam duo Ajmal Shahzad and Steve Patterson shared the final four wickets.
Nottinghamshire travel to Old Trafford to take on Lancashire next week, while Yorkshire have a home game against relegation-threatened Kent.
Day Two
Nottinghamshire clawed their way back into their LV= County Championship match against Yorkshire but are still facing the prospect of defeat after day two at Trent Bridge.
The hosts wrapped up the Yorkshire first innings with the addition of only four runs in the morning before reaching 357 for six in their second dig, a lead of 152.
Makeshift opener Paul Franks combined with Alex Hales to put on 56 for the first wicket, Nottinghamshire's first half-century opening partnership of the season.
Franks made 79 before Adil Rashid claimed the first of two wickets, breaking a stand of 131 with Mark Wagh as Jacques Rudolph claimed a catch at slip.
Wagh went on to add 100 in 20 overs with Adam Voges before Rashid had him caught at mid-on via a mis-cue, 10 runs short of a century having hit 14 fours and two sixes.
Ajmal Shahzad then produced a fiery spell to send Ali Brown and Samit Patel back in quick succession, and although Voges fell for 72 just before the second new ball was taken, captain Chris Read and Darren Pattinson combined to add an unbeaten 28 for the seventh wicket before stumps.
Earlier, Andre Adams finished with six for 82 as he removed Oliver Hannon-Dalby and Moin Ashraf in his first two overs, leaving Andrew Gale stranded on 151.
Day One
Leaders Nottinghamshire were skittled out for just 59 by Yorkshire at Trent Bridge - their lowest total in 22 years.
England seamer Ajmal Shahzad claimed four for 21, while Oliver Hannon-Dalby ripped out the tail with four for 18, as Notts collapsed in just 33.2 overs.
Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale then hit an unbeaten 147 as the visitors racked up 260 for eight in reply, giving them a lead of 201 and putting them right back in the race for their first championship pennant since 2001.
Andre Adams added to his career-best season haul of 58 wickets with four for 82, but Notts already face a massive challenge to rescue anything from the game and stay ahead of second-placed Somerset.
With heavy overnight rain leaving the pitch looking extremely green, it was an easy decision for Gale to insert Notts after winning the toss and Trent Bridge once again proved to be a seam bowler's paradise, as Mark Wagh top-scored with just 22.
Although Gale rode his luck in the early stages, he went on to play with increasing confidence to post his third century of the season from just 85 balls, slowing down in the final session.
He was the only batsman to truly master the conditions all day, dominating a partnership of 111 for the fourth wicket with Jonathan Bairstow (36).
