Paul Harris claimed three wickets as South Africa completed victory by an innings and six runs over India with a day to spare in the Nagpur Test.

India, following on, were bowled out for 319 on the fourth evening despite Sachin Tendulkar's century.

Left-arm spinner Harris (3-76) broke the back of the home side's middle order with the wickets of Murali Vijay, Tendulkar and MS Dhoni before tea.

And paceman Dale Steyn finished off proceedings in the evening session to record his fourth 10-wicket match haul in 37 Tests.

Swept away

India resumed at 66-2 in their second innings at the start of the fourth day, needing a further 259 to make South Africa bat again.

Vijay and Tendulkar initially made good progress, extending their third-wicket alliance to 72 before Harris made his first intervention, the becalmed Vijay sweeping straight to Morne Morkel on the square-leg boundary to depart for 32.

Subramaniam Badrinath (6) also fell in the morning session, edging behind off Wayne Parnell to leave the hosts on 122-4.

Tendulkar went to his 46th Test hundred during a fifth-wicket stand of 70 either side of lunch with skipper Dhoni.

The Mumbai right-hander brought up the milestone from 177 balls, including 13 fours, but failed to add any more.

Attempting to sweep Harris from outside leg-stump, Tendulkar dragged the ball back onto the furniture via thigh pad and arm.

The spinner followed up with the scalp of Dhoni (25), caught at silly point off bat and pad to leave India at 209-6, still 50 behind overall.

The lower order went on the attack in the evening session in the hope of setting South Africa a small target, Wriddhiman Saha, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan all producing cameos.

Harbhajan (39) smashed six fours and a six before being undone by the second new ball, Parnell (2-58) trapping him lbw.

Steyn cleans up

Zaheer (33) also launched some lusty blows, twice clearing the rope, but went for one too many and top-edged an attempted pull at a short delivery from Jacques Kallis (1-19) to mid-off.

The stage was set for Steyn (3-57), who had routed India for 233 in the first innings with seven wickets, to perform the last rites.

He had Saha (36) lbw and bowled Amit Mishra (0) in consecutive overs to finish with match figures of 10-108.

It was not enough, however, to earn him the man-of-the-match award - that honour went to Hashim Amla for his 253 not out in South Africa's first innings of 558-6 declared.

The two-match series concludes at Eden Gardens, Kolkata from February 14-18 where a draw would be enough for South Africa to reclaim the top spot in the International Cricket Council 's Test rankings from India.

Wow so many emails and only 1 praising Hashim Amla. What a fantastic, well organised and talented batsman he appears. He has been so consistent. Well done SA.

Of all the 11 comments nobody gives credit to Hasim Amla for his superb batting performance.Give a man praise when he deserved it.Whenever some batsmen and bowlers do not make a contribution, the press and comments are very negative.Must some players be 10 times better than other before been accepted as genuine cricketers. No guys these men like Hasim,Aswill,Duminy deserve better treatment. They will and had prove you all wrong.Cricket is moving into a new dimension,Give credit when it is due.

Hi John Ferguson, you make a good point about the UDRS system. It must be implemented for all test games. As for Prince, he is a good player but opening an innings is not for him. He is the ideal batsman to anchor the innings at 5 or even 6. He did have some tough decisions against him, but that is how it goes sometimes - Prince struggled and allowed the opposition opportunities to appeal against him. To date, he has not succeeded in opening an innings against England and now India.

India without Dravid , Laxman , Yuvraj and Sreesanth is no match for South Africa . Hopefully in the next game they would be back and make a match of it !

India tried so hard but in the end South Africa got the upper hand. Tendulkar did very well by getting his half centrury! People have to remember that India is missing two of their best players...... If they were here India could have had a much better chance!!!! In the next test I'm sure that India will try much harder, and hopefully they will also win!!

John Ferguson says...

Congratulations to South Africa for a job well done. To the people who feel Prince is not good enough to open the innings . Was Prince out or ruled out? If the ruling umpire had sought help from the third umpire Prince would have been ruled not out as the ball came off his arm guard. Please guys give constructive criticism. On a final note why isn't the UDRS system in use in this series. It seems the BCCI is running cricket and not the ICC this system should be used across the cricketing globe.

Fantastic win clinical in all aspects but let's not forget that india didn't have threee of their top batsmen, I will really love to see how well they will do in kolkatta wen some of this batsmen returns

Great win for South Africa away from home. India had some key players such as Dravid, Yuvraj and Sreesanth missing in this test. Still, all credit to South Africa for producing an outstanding performance. Agree with Pfunzo that Ashwell Prince is not good enough to open the batting. De Villiers must be given a chance to open with Smith with Prince batting at No.5. The South Africa bowlers needs to lift their game and provide more support for Steyn.

If SA put Amla in at the top and then Prince at number 6, They would be very hard to beat anywhere. Hope they will wake up and not ruin Prince by keepinhg him at number two!!!

Fantastic result, especially off the back of Mickey Arthur leaving recently. Agree with AB opening with Smith and Prince at 5, but I dont see what Neil Mackenzie has really done wrong to miss out. I dont know 3 or 4 of the players in the Indian side, so they are going through a period of transformation. Here's to a 2-0 win.

after watching the proteas stumble against england ,this result is amazing. one can only assume that the problems that resulted in the departure of mickey arthur were at their peak during the series against england and that must surely have been a distraction. even so,england were never really in the series and south africa were only 2 wickets away from a commanding series win. congratulations to sachin tendulkar on yet another century. open the top drawer and you will find kallis and ponting. however, tendulkar is above the top drawer.as for bradman, surely only the aussies can truly believe deep down that he is the best of all time. i just wonder what bradmans average wouldve been had he faced as many overs, hostile bowling, dodgy umpiring decisions, third umpires and now review systems as tendulkar has over what has been a splendid career.

Pfunzo Nemaheni says...

The team is now balanced, when the openers fails to score run, other batsman are ready to take the challenge and score runs for the team. I think that AB de Villiers must open with Graeme Smith and Ashwell Prince bat at no.5 or 6 in oder to with right and left handers. Thumbs up to Steyn and company for well deserved victory and now the bowling attack is well balanced with parnell as the third simmers.

Well done SA, a clinical win, Steyn shoul have shared man-of-the-match.

Anthony Cavanagh says...

Emphatic win for South Africa. Such a pity this series between the top two ranked test teams is limited to only two test matches. The ICC needs to introduce a minimum of 4 test matches per series for the top 8 nations on both a home and away basis over a four year cycle. Only when all the top teams play an equal number of games can the top ranked team truly claim to be the best.

south africa showed that they are the team who deserved to be no.1 in test cricket. they have been doing for no. of years whereas indian test record particularly outside of india is not good enough.
