Australia overcame a wobble with the bat to beat Bangladesh by 27 runs in Barbados, a result that knocks the Tigers out of the ICC World Twenty20.

Having comfortably beaten Pakistan, who are also through to the Super Eights, Michael Clarke's side had to show their fighting qualities to make it two wins from two in the Caribbean.

At 65 for six a shock looked on the cards, but Michael Hussey, who made 47 not out, and Steven Smith (27) rescued Australia's innings.

In the end a total of 141 for seven was more than enough, Bangladesh never recovering from 15 for four as they were bowled out for 114.

Speed demons

Dirk Nannes was the pick of the Australian attack with four for 18, while opening partner Shaun Tait ended up with one for 15 from his four overs.

The two speedsters simply blew their opponents away in the powerplay overs.

Tait set the tone with an explosive opening over that ended with the wicket of Imrul Kayes. He then took a good low catch down at third man just three balls later to send Mohammad Ashraful on his way without troubling the scorers.

Nannes, who played for Holland in last year's tournament, followed up by getting two wickets in his second over - Aftab Ahmed (one) and Mahmudullah (two) his victims - before returning at the death to dismiss Jahurul Islam for 18.

After such a disastrous start, Shakib Al Hasan (28) and Mushfiqur Rahim (24) did their best to repair the damage with a fifth-wicket stand of 48.

Injudicious shots

However Bangladesh fell well short in the end, leaving them to look back on their inability to ram home their advantage with the ball earlier in the day.

Some injudicious shot selection saw Australia's top order crumble before Hussey and Smith steadied the ship with a crucial partnership worth 74.

Batting at seven, Hussey measured his innings to perfection. After ticking over with singles he cut loose at the death, slamming a six off Mashrafe Mortaza (two for 28) in a 17th over which yielded 17 runs.

Smith joined in on the act with a pair of maximums in the penultimate over bowled by Abdul Razzak before being run out trying to sneak a bye.
