Symonds: All-round quality
A fine all-round display from Andrew Symonds inspired the Deccan Chargers to a 10-run victory over the Delhi Daredevils in Cuttack.
The controversial Australian smashed 35 in his side's total of 171-6 and then claimed figures of 3-21 with the ball as Delhi fell short.
India's Rohit Sharma top-scored for Deccan with a belligerent 45 and other useful contributions from Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs (31) and Tirumalasetti Suman (29 not out) powered the defending champions to a challenging total.
In reply, David Warner struck 57 off 33 balls and Dinesh Karthik made 46, but Symonds pegged Delhi back with a controlled spell at the death.
The Chargers kept their run-rate up despite losing opener Monish Sharma to the leg-break of Amit Mishra in the first over of the match.
But Gibbs, coming in at number three, took a liking to Dirk Nannes, smashing the Aussie paceman for a six and two boundaries in the second over as the Chargers exploded into action.
Deccan skipper Adam Gilchrist joined the party and blasted his way to a 14-ball 24 before perishing to Sarabjit Ladda.
Runs continued to flow after Symonds and Gibbs came together, the duo adding 28 together before the South African was snared by Yogesh Nagar.
Symonds departed soon after and the Chargers lost their way somewhat, but Rohit and Suman upped the tempo at the death and the Chargers sped past the 150-run mark.
Australia opener Warner got the Daredevils' chase off to an excellent start and had reached 29 before opening partner Virender Sehwag had even faced a ball.
Sehwag never got going and fell for three, but AB de Villiers, who has struggled for form in the tournament so far, revived the innings with a knock of 27.
Both Warner and De Villiers fell in quick succession and the Daredevils' challenge then withered, leaving Karthik fighting a lone battle.
The Daredevils were left needing 37 from the last three overs and Karthik brought that target down by hammering leg-spinner Rahul Sharma for 17, but Symonds returned in the 19th to snare Karthik and the Daredevils fell short.
