Yuvraj: Helped Kings XI to victory
Yuvraj Singh held his nerve to help Kings XI Punjab secure their first Indian Premier League win against Chennai Super Kings via the super over.
Chennai won the toss and sent the visitors into bat, with Muttiah Muralitharan (3-16) delivering a commanding performance to restrict them to 136-8, with only Yuvraj (43) and Irfan Pathan (39) contributing notable knocks.
Parthiv Patel scored 57 off 58 balls and added 65 for the opening wicket with Matthew Hayden (66), putting the Super Kings firmly on course for victory.
However, a surge of wickets led to the scores being tied after the regulation 20 overs a side, and the super-over rule was enforced.
Chennai managed just nine off Juan Theron's over, losing both Hayden and Suresh Raina, leaving Kings XI needing 10 to win.
Mahela Jayawardene hammered Muralitharan for a six before falling, but Yuvraj pulled off a reverse sweep to secured the victory with two deliveries to spare.
Irfan made the most of his promotion to the top of the order and set up a solid platform for Kings XI, even as wickets fell around him.
Top Kings XI scorer Ravi Bopara suffered his first failure, slashing Albie Morkel to Lakshmipathy Balaji at third man before falling to Muralitharan.
Kumar Sangakkara was stumped by the off-spinner for 15 and also trapped Jayawardene for three in his first stint, while Balaji removed Irfan in the meantime, leaving Kings XI under pressure.
It was up to Yuvraj to perform the rescue mission as he helped rebuild with a 45-run stand with Mohammad Kaif (14).
However, Muralitharan returned to upset that partnership by removing Kaif and Kings XI were left floundering once again.
Yuvraj worked hard to up the run rate at the death, falling seven short of a half-century, leaving Kings XI with a meagre total to defend.
Hayden clobbered Romesh Powar for a six and four off consecutive deliveries as the Super Kings embarked on their chase, before Powar eventually returned to bowl the left-hander for 33.
Chennai required a further 72 from 68 deliveries after that and stand-in skipper Raina (15) narrowed the equation to less than a run a ball during his short appearance.
But the Kings XI bowlers, who had been somewhat docile up to that point, turned up the heat by dismissing Raina, Murali Vijay and Subramaniam Badrinath before ending Parthiv's efforts in the 18th over.
Chennai needed 10 from the final over and Irfan conceded nine off the first four deliveries, but then fired a dot ball and claimed the wicket of Ravichandran Ashwin off the final delivery to send the match into the super over.
