David Willey: claimed a five-wicket haul to bowl Northamptonshire to victory

Paceman David Willey took 5-39 as Northamptonshire defeated Hampshire by 117 runs on the fourth and final day at Wantage Road.

Set a target of 297 to win from 71 overs, the visitors looked to be in a promising position when Michael Carberry and Simon Katich (31) took the score along to 92-2.

Yet despite Carberry's impressive 61 off 88 balls Hampshire fell well short in their chase, eventually being bowled out for 179 in the 41st over.

Willey had removed openers Liam Dawson and Sean Terry with the new ball but his most crucial wicket was that of Carberry, who was trapped lbw with the last ball before tea.

The left-armer completed the third five-wicket haul of his career when Chris Wood (11) edged him to wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien and the result was wrapped up when David Balcombe departed for eight.

The win was the first in the LV= County Championship this season for Northamptonshire, who had added 56 in the morning session before declaring their second innings on 232-9.

Day Three

Northamptonshire go into the final day of their LV= County Championship clash in control after skittling out Hampshire for 154 and extending their lead to 240.

Stating the day on 42-3 after losing the whole of day two to rain, the visitors were all out before tea, still 64 runs short of Northamptonshire's first innings total of 218.

South African paceman Andrew Hall was the pick of the bowlers, finishing the innings with 4-24 from nine overs while David Willey followed up his captain with 3-53.

Rob Newton went cheaply for 14 in the eighth over of Northants' second innings when he edged David Balcombe to Liam Dawson at second slip.

Fellow opener Stephen Peters fell on 22 and Kyle Coetzer followed in the third over after tea for 25 when he too was taken by Dawson who also caught Alex Wakely (15) in similar fashion.

But David Sales made the first half-century of the match reaching 58 before falling lbw to Dawson late in the day. The hosts closed on Hall unbeaten on 176 for five, with Hall unbeaten on 29 and Niall O'Brien on three.

Day Two

The second day's play between Northamptonshire and Hampshire was washed out without a ball being bowled.

Heavy overnight rain meant the outfield was sodden and, after two pitch inspections, umpires Martin Bodenham and Nigel Llong decided to abandon the day at 3.30pm.

Day One

A total of 13 wickets fell on the first day of Northants' match with Hampshire as the bowlers tucked in on some very friendly conditions.

Young seamer Chris Wood took four wickets and Northamptonshire lost their last five wickets for just 21 runs as they collapsed to 218 all out, with their opener Stephen Peters top-scoring with 44.

Wood returned figures of 4-52 and former Zimbabwe international Sean Ervine 3-32 before Hampshire also struggled and eventually stuttered to the close on 42-3, 176 runs behind.

The visitors won the toss and chose to field but Northants looked comfortable as the opening pair of Peters and Rob Newton made it to 68 before the latter edged David Balcombe to Liam Dawson at second slip.

That was as good as it got for Northants as wickets continued to tumble, with only Scotland international Kyle Coetzer sticking it out to make a pedestrian 41 off 137 balls before playing on to Wood.

Hampshire looked on top but they also struggled in the conditions and lost Terry for 12 before Hamza Riazuddin went three balls later - and Michael Carberry's wicket left Hampshire also in trouble at stumps.
