New Zealand beat Bangladesh by 3 wkts

Night-watchman Daniel Vettori struck a measured 76 as New Zealand chased down 317 to win the first Test against Bangladesh by three wickets.

After dominating for long spells of the match, Bangladesh failed to secure only their second ever Test victory as the Black Caps battled back in Chittagong.

Aaron Redmond led the way at the top of the order with a spirited 79 before Vettori and Daniel Flynn (49) ensured New Zealand snatched the initiative in the two-Test series.

The Black Caps began the morning needing 172 runs for victory and Vettori quickly set about reducing that figure with a couple of early boundaries.

Redmond got in on the act when he drove Shahadat Hossain off his back foot through extra cover before despatching a full toss down the ground from the same bowler.

However Shakib Al Hasan, who took seven wickets in the first innings, struck to remove Redmond for 79 when he looked well set.

Damage

The left-arm spinner induced an edge that was claimed well by Junaid Siddique at slip to leave the score on 185-3.

Vettori forged on unperturbed, cutting Shakib to the fence to bring up New Zealand's 200.

But the tourists lost another wicket nine runs later as Ross Taylor (9) steered a short ball from Mashrafe Mortaza into the hands of substitute fielder Mahbubul Alam.

Vettori was unbeaten on 36 at lunch with wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum having made one and New Zealand needing just 105 more runs to claim the match.

Abdur Razzaq srtuck immediately after the interval to remove McCullum for just two, however a sixth-wicket stand of 82 between Vettori and Flynn put the tourists on the brink of victory.

The New Zealand skipper did depart for a match-winning 76, however the damage had already been done as Jacob Oram (8no) and Kyle Mills (1) guided the tourists into a 1-0 series lead in the final session.
