Smith and McKenzie happy after historic partnership

South Africa captain Graeme Smith and fellow opening partner Neil McKenzie both expressed their delight after a stunning 400-run partnership in Chittagong. The two openers put the Bangladesh attack to the sword in an uncompromising display of hitting in the sub-continent. Smith became the first ever South African to score four double-hundreds, and he was quick to admit that winning the toss earlier in the day was vital. "I think there are lot of the boys in there are very happy we won the toss," he told Sky Sports News. "When we got to 400 I said to Macca (McKenzie), somehow I thought I would never be a part of a 400 partnership, so obviously I'm glad."

Chuffed

McKenzie was named on the tour in place of the out-of-favour Herschelle Gibbs. The 31-year-old claimed he knew runs would be there for the taking provided he stayed at the crease. "I'm really chuffed, it's been a few years down the line," McKenzie said. "It's always nice to bat in the sub-continent up front with the new ball so I knew if I got in I would give myself a chance. "It's always nice with Biff (Smith) because he is always keeping the scoreboard ticking. "I've had a lot of support from the coach and the guys and it's good to be back." The pair require just nine more runs on Saturday to record the highest ever opening-wicket partnership.
