Recalled spinner Murali Kartik has been ruled out of India's Test series against South Africa after suffering a torn ligament in his left ankle.
The 31-year-old has not played a Test since lining up against the Proteas in November 2004.
However the left-arm spinner has been ruled out for at least three weeks after suffering the injury fielding in a domestic one-day match.
"It is a serious injury and will take a minimum of three weeks to heal," said surgeon Chetan Rai, who examined Kartik.
Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, 19, will replace Kartik for the squad, with the first Test starting in Chennai on March 26 and the second in Ahmedabad from April 3.
Kartlik joins Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma in the treatment room, while Mahendra Singh Dhoni and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh have been named in the squad despite injury concerns over the duo.
