Jacques Kallis will lead South Africa in the third Test against Australia, Cricket South Africa (CSA) have confirmed.
Kallis replaces Ashwell Prince, the official vice captain, as skipper for the March 19-23 fixure in Cape Town.
Prince was recalled to the team after captain Graeme Smith broke his finger during the second Test defeat in Durban, a result that gave Australia an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
But the left-hander, back in favour after missing South Africa's last five Tests, is to open the batting in Cape Town, something he has never previously done.
"Cricket South Africa has decided to stand Ashwell Prince down as captain to allow him to concentrate on his new position of opening batsman," a CSA statement read.
"Jacques Kallis will now captain the team on a one-off basis in next week's third Castle Test against Australia at Sahara Park, Newlands."
The 33-year-old has captained South Africa once before during his 130-Test career, overseeing a two-wicket defeat to Australia the Wanderers in April 2006.
