Saltires miss out on World Cup qualification despite win

Scotland failed to qualify for the 2011 World Cup despite a comprehensive 122-run victory over the United Arab Emirates in their final match of the qualifying tournament in South Africa. After suffering four defeats in the Super Eight stage, Scotland were forced to settle for a fifth-placed finish - ensuring that Ireland, Canada, Kenya and the Netherlands have all qualified for the next World Cup. Fifth-placed Afghanistan and sixth-placed Scotland have guaranteed One-Day international status for four years, however the tournament cannot be considered anything other than a failure for a side who won the same event four years ago. A blistering century from Gavin Hamilton (127) helped give the Saltires the big win they were looking for over UAE at Willowmoore Park in Benoni. But their desperate bid to snatch the fourth and final qualifying spot ended in failure after both Holland and Kenya avoided defeat. The Saltires posted 299-7 thanks mainly to Hamilton's second ODI century - a 124-ball knock including 10 fours and three sixes - and Neil McCallum's quickfire 54. UAE never threatened the Scotland target and finished all out on 177 with 10.2 overs to spare. Nithin Gopal made 50 and Craig Wright was the pick of the Scotland bowlers with figures of 4-41 from his 10-over allocation.
