Former England opener adamant his old captain still has more to offer

Marcus Trescothick insists England will miss Ashes-winning captain Michael Vaughan this summer. The former England captain is set to announce his retirement at an ECB-convened press conference on Tuesday morning. He will be best remembered for his role in masterminding the success over Australia in 2005 and his fellow Ashes hero Trescothick feels he could have played a key part again. "His experience within this year's Ashes side would have been really important," Trescothick told Sky Sports News. "Obviously we worked closely together for a couple of years and had a great time, culminating in us winning the Ashes. "To work with him, experience him and talk to him was a key moment for all of us. It was great to have that relationship with him." Vaughan stepped down as captain last summer to be replaced by Kevin Pietersen and had hoped it would prolong his career as a batsman.

Qualities

His form, however, has not warranted selection for England and he was omitted from the 16-man training squad named for the Ashes after scoring just 147 runs in seven County Championship innings for Yorkshire. He has also failed to complete an entire day in the field for the county this season, but looks set to leave the game with a record of 18 Test centuries and 5,719 runs in 52 matches. Vaughan was ranked as the top batsman in the world after scoring three centuries on the 2002-03 Australia tour and was the logical choice to take over the captaincy in 2004, according to Trescothick. "When Nasser Hussain finished the team needed to move forward and Michael was the right guy at the time," he added. "He's a leader of men who has the ability - behind the scenes as well - to keep people going. People see what he does on the field but they don't see the off-the-field Michael. "He was brilliant at keeping you going to the next game, the next innings, or the next day. That's what he was great at." Vaughan met with Yorkshire officials to discuss his future and was then absent from the county's Twenty20 Cup side that went down to Derbyshire on Sunday, adding weight to the belief that he will stand down from all forms of the game.
