Surrey's first innings collapse continued when they lost their final three wickets for the addition of just two runs and they followed on 357 behind.
But with their joint leading wicket-taker Chris Wright unable to bowl and off the field because of illness, Warwickshire could only take four more wickets all day as Surrey reached 234-4 and the safety of a draw at 5.50pm.
Surrey, who are still looking for their first Championship win of the season, had lost four wickets in five overs on the third evening and their slide continued in the morning as their last three batsmen were dismissed in 16 deliveries for the addition of just five runs.
Chris Tremlett became Boyd Rankin's fourth victim when he was caught behind before Keith Barker took the final two wickets.
He claimed the prized scalp of Ricky Ponting, who had added just two to his overnight 50, when the former Australia captain was held at first slip.
Rankin then finished off the innings when Jade Dernbach drove a slower ball to mid off, Barker finishing with 4-45 and Rankin 4-43.
Warwickshire brought off-spinner Jeetan Patel into their attack after just five overs of Surrey's second innings and he made the breakthrough on 46 when Varun Chopra held a juggling catch at slip.
But Rory Burns and Vikram Solanki calmed Surrey nerves with a stand of 66 in 28 overs either side of lunch.
