Broad's participation had been in doubt after the England all-rounder was struck on the right shoulder by a ball from James Pattinson while batting on Wednesday and was unable to bowl during the early overs of Australia's first innings later in the day.
His absence meant that fast bowling duties were left to James Anderson and Steven Finn, who grabbed two wickets apiece as Australia were reduced to 75-4 in reply to England's 215 all out.
Broad's injured shoulder required ice treatment overnight in the hope of getting him fit for day two.
He was struck on the same shoulder - although in a different spot - where he was given a cortisone injection on a sore joint last week which enabled him to line up in the first Test at Trent Bridge.
On a remarkable first day of the five-Test Ashes series, 14 wickets fell in Nottingham after home skipper Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to bat.
