Bresnan was the one change made by the home team from the XI that played in the victory at Trent Bridge, Steven Finn the man to make way.
The Yorkshireman has not played a Test since the tour of India at the end of last year, since when he has undergone surgery on his bowling elbow.
Australia, meanwhile, have made two changes to their side as they look to square the five-match series.
Ed Cowan had paid the price for making 14 runs in two innings at Nottingham, his place at number three in the order being taken by Usman Khawaja, while Ryan Harris is preferred to fellow seamer Mitchell Starc.
Visiting captain Michael Clarke called incorrectly at the toss, giving opposite number Cook the chance to bat on what looked set to be a glorious morning.
Play got underway 15 minutes later than normal to accommodate a visit from Her Majesty The Queen. She was introduced to both teams at the famous ground that is owned by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
