The 23-year-old has been pulled out of Pakistan's squad to tour Zimbabwe and it was initially reported that he had suffered a back injury.
However, a relative of the exciting batsman told AFP: "We are told that Umar suffered a seizure on the flight to Jamaica and was rushed to a hospital, where he spent a night before being rushed back to Pakistan.
"Umar's physio was with him and took him to the hospital. The same official will be travelling with him to Dubai as a precaution."
The family say doctors in the West Indies are confident Umar is not in any danger.
He had been lining up for Barbados Tridents in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League following Pakistan's recent tour of the West Indies.
Pakistan will play the first of two Twenty20 matches against Zimbabwe in Harare on August 23 before playing three one-day internationals and two Tests on the tour.
Wicket-keeper batsman Sarfraz Ahmed has replaced Umar in the squad.
