Australian Trevor Bayliss is the surprise name in negotiations with the ECB about becoming England’s new head coach.
Another Australian in Jason Gillespie was thought to be the firm favourite for the job but after he ruled himself out of the running, it appears the ECB director of cricket Andrew Strauss has turned his attentions to Bayliss.
Here’s all you need to know about the 52-year-old…
He is NOT the inventor of the wind-up radio. That is Trevor Baylis
Bayliss played 58 first-class matches, averaging 35.58 with the bat for New South Wales between 1985 and 1997. He also featured in 50 List A matches.
He never played international cricket for Australia, but once his playing career finished, Bayliss became a cricket development officer for the NSW Cricket Association and subsequently became head coach of NSW in the 2004/05 season.
Bayliss has led New South Wales to two Sheffield Shield titles in two stints as head coach and won the ING Cup in 2006.
He coached Sri Lanka between 2007 and 2011. During his stint as Sri Lanka coach he worked alongside England assistant coach Paul Farbrace and led the country to number two in the Test rankings.
Both Bayliss and Farbrace were on the Sri Lankan team bus when it was attacked by terrorists in Pakistan in 2009.
He also had an excellent limited overs record as Sri Lankan coch, leading them to the 2009 World Twenty20 final where they lost to Pakistan. He also guided them to the semi-finals of the 2010 tournament where they lost to England.
Sri Lanka also reached the 2011 World Cup final under Bayliss’ leadership where they were beaten by fellow hosts India by six wickets.
He has also enjoyed successful stints in both the IPL and Big Bash leagues, where he has managed the Sydney Sixers (2012) and Kolkata Knight Riders (2012 and 2014) to title success in recent years.
He led the Sydney Sixers to Champions League glory in 2012 - the same year they won the Big Bash.
He was interviewed by the ECB when they appointed Peter Moores for the England job 18 months ago.
Finally, Bayliss coached Australia last year against South Africa. He was in charge of the team for the Twenty20 portion of the limited overs serieswhile Darren Lehmann took a short break.
