Hampshire set Somerset 259 to win in their low-scoring Specsavers County Championship contest at Taunton, teenage offspinner Dominic Bess starring with seven wickets.
Nineteen-year-old Bess claimed a career-best 7-117 - the third time in his four Championship appearances that he has taken at least a five-for - as Hampshire were bowled out for 293 in their second innings on Saturday.
The visitors still had arguably the better of day two, with Somerset - who resumed on 157-5 in reply to Hampshire's 162 - only earning a 35-run first-innings lead.
Hampshire then batted aggressively, scoring at 4.34 runs per over in their second dig, but only Michael Carberry (51) could manage a fifty.
By the close of play, Somerset had reached 39-0 with Marcus Trescothick 22 not out and Dean Elgar unbeaten on 17, the home side still requiring a further 220 for victory.
Kumar Sangakkara turned his starring century for Surrey into a double on day two of their game against Essex at Chelmsford.
Resuming the day on 177 not out, Sangakkara reached his double hundred shortly before becoming the last wicket to fall as Surrey were bowled out for 369.
Essex, in reply, were going along nicely at 215-3 by stumps, with Dan Lawrence (78no) closing in on his second century of the season.
Earlier, opener Nick Browne notched his first half-century of the summer in a dogged show of crease occupation. His 52 took 152 balls and at one point in the afternoon, he scored just two runs in 50 minutes' play.
