Ben Coad took a career-best 6-25 as Yorkshire seized control of the Specsavers County Championship Roses clash at Headingley by bowling out Lancashire for 123 on day one.

Lancashire opted to bat first but were then delayed by morning rain before slipping to 48-6, as Coad and Ryan Sidebottom (3-30) ran through the top order.

At one stage, Coad had figures of 4-5 from 3.1 overs, and his 32 first-class wickets for the season is more than anyone else in the country.

Yorkshire were left with 34 overs to bat before close, and they reached 93-2 from 25.4 following more rain late on - Adam Lyth finishing unbeaten on 40.

Jimmy Adams and Sean Ervine recorded Hampshire's best fourth-wicket partnership against Warwickshire as the pair led a remarkable recovery for the hosts.

Adams (104no) and Ervine (16ono) put on 263 together, which was also an Ageas Bowl record, as they helped the hosts recover from 31-3 to end the day on 294 without losing another wicket.

The experienced duo, who have been mainstays in the Hampshire line-up together for 11 years, topped the 120-year county record of 222 which was set by Walter Andrew and Arthur Hill.

Dean Elgar maintained his prolific start to the county season by hitting an unbeaten half century for Somerset on day one against Middlesex at Lord's.

A burst of heavy rain in late afternoon, followed by bad light, meant only half a day's play was possible, but Elgar's 77 not out helped rally Somerset from a perilous position at 80-5 to 161-5.

Toby Roland-Jones (1-45) reminded the England selectors - searching for a replacement for Chris Woakes in the Champions trophy - of his value, taking the wicket of Marcus Trescothick with only his 10th ball.
