England Women suffered a 35-run defeat to India in the opening game of the ICC Women's World Cup, in Derby.
Having put India into bat first, England could only watch on helplessly in the field as opener Smriti Mandhana smashed a stunning 90 off 72 balls.
Mandhana shared in a 144-run opening stand with Punam Raut (86), while Indian skipper Mithali Raj also impressed scoring 71 to lift her side up to an imposing 281-3 total.
In reply England struggled to 67-3 inside 18 overs - Natalie Sciver (18) the first ever woman to be given out using DRS, gloving behind when sweeping.
Captain Heather Knight hit 46 to help lead the recovery, while a stunning 81 off 75 balls from Fran Wilson then seemed to be guiding the hosts to victory.
But, with 68 required from the final nine overs, England would suffer the first of three costly run outs - including Katherine Brunt (24) and Wilson - to see their hopes of a tournament-opening victory fade.
England now move on to Leicester, where they will face Pakistan in their second game, on Tuesday.
In the tournament's other game on the opening day, New Zealand Women made light work of Sri Lanka, winning by nine wickets, in Bristol.
Veteran Kiwi captain Suzie Bates (106no) struck a superb century and Amy Satterthwaite hit an unbeaten 78 as they chased down their 189-run target in just 37-4 overs.
Earlier, seamer Holly Huddleston took 5-35 with the ball for the White Ferns as Sri Lanka collapsed from 141-1 to 188-9.
