Ben Stokes and Marlon Samuels will renew rivalry on Tuesday with their captains ready to let the fireworks happen.

West Indies' Samuels has twice had high-profile words with England's combative all-rounder, who goes into the first game of a five-match ODI series on Tuesday on the verge of an international suspension.

The pair clashed in the Caribbean in 2015 and again the following year, when Samuels chipped in from the non-striker's end as Carlos Brathwaite hit Stokes for four straight sixes to win the ICC World Twenty 20 final.

The recalled Jamaican has already warned Stokes to "stay on the boundary" or risk a third confrontation, but Eoin Morgan will not be reining in his Durham star.

"I have no worries at all, absolutely none," the England skipper said. "I want Ben to be himself. I want him to get into the contest of a game. It's part and parcel of his character... and getting the best out of Ben Stokes."

Morgan's counterpart Jason Holder took a similar view on Samuels on the eve of the Old Trafford opener.

He said: "Marlon is one competitive guy ... whatever Marlon needs to do to get fired up, I'm quite happy for him to do it - as long as it's in the spirit of the game and doesn't go too overboard.

"I can understand why the public relate to that. They like to see these things. As long as it doesn't go too overboard, I think it's ideal for the game.

"I hope these two guys can stay out of trouble, and we can have a smooth-sailing series."
