Wicketkeeper backs fellow Ashes winner to return to Test team
Geraint Jones believes axed England opener Andrew Strauss can regain his Test place.
The Middlesex left-hander was the one surprising omission from the 15-man party named for the upcoming three-match series in Sri Lanka.
Jones is no stranger to being dropped by England, the wicketkeeper having lost his place behind the stumps during the Ashes last winter.
He admits being surprised that Strauss was not taken on tour, particularly after he was given a central contract the previous month, but is certain his fellow Ashes winner can bounce back.
Tough time
"It was definitely a surprise to see Straussy left out," said the gloveman who was born in Papua New Guinea and then raised Down Under.
"He has had a tough time over the last 12 months and they obviously felt he could do with the time off.
"With the England team you are on the road for 12 months of the year and it does take its toll.
"As disappointed as Straussy is I think it will do him good and he will be back. It is a bit of a setback for now but I am sure he will come back stronger."
Jones is currently away on tour himself after being called up to play in the Hong Kong Sixes tournament which takes place this weekend.
The 31-year-old was drafted in to replace Shahid Afridi in the All-Stars team which also features Brian Lara and Glenn McGrath.
