Owais Shah insists he must stay professional if he is to win a spot in England's Test team.
The Middlesex batsman has played just two Test matches so far and averages 34 runs.
He has made some invaluable knocks for England in the shorter form of the game though and shared a record fifth-wicket stand of 102 with skipper Paul Collingwood in the Twenty20 victory over New Zealand on Thursday.
Essex all-rounder Ravi Bopara was favoured on tour in Sri Lanka and Shah remains diplomatic about his future in the Test match arena.

"It's not something I worry about," he told Sky Sports 1. "I take it each game at a time. If the selectors think I'm good enough hopefully I'll get the nod, if not I'll just keep working hard at my game and hopefully keep putting the runs on the board.
"In Twenty20 anything can happen and we lost a few wickets too soon today, so I thought I should try and build a partnership and obviously that's exactly what we did.
"Paul played magnificently and obviously I just played a supporting role and towards the end I tried to open my shoulders up as well.
"It was a great partnership and hopefully that will give us some momentum for the one-day series. We're going in the right direction.
"We've got a really good group of guys playing together and it's a really good playing environment at the moment."
