Neal McKenzie believes South Africa need a score of "450 plus" in the first innings of the first Test against India.
The opener scored 94 and put on a partnership of 132 with captain Graeme Smith for the Proteas' first wicket on day one in Chennai.
The tourists eventually worked their way up to 304-4 at the close with Hashim Amla unbeaten on 85 runs alongside AB de Villiers.
They were pegged back after lunch by spinners Anil Kumble (2-61) and Harbhajan Singh (2-92) though, and McKenzie concedes his side still have plenty of work to do to take control of the match.

"It was really nice to get some runs out there," McKenzie told Sky Sports 2. "Disappointed not to get 100.
"The pitch was really nice, a bit more bounce than I expected. Growing up on the South African decks you're used to that bounce, so you can sort of leave a bit on length. It went through quite nicely this morning.
"All our bowlers are quality and I think we can exploit it if it does bounce with the new ball on day two.
"We need 450 plus. It will be hard work in the morning and then we have to get into them."
