Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews has seen his Indian Premier League dream wrecked with the news that he will be sidelined for eight weeks with a leg injury.
The 23-year-old, who was forced to sit out Saturday's World Cup final defeat to India, was due to play in the lucrative IPL for Pune Warriors after clinching a $950,000 contract.
However, after pulling a muscle in his thigh while fielding in Sri Lanka's semi-final win against New Zealand, Mathews will not be fit in time for the competition, which begins on April 8 in Chennai.
"I have pulled a muscle," the 23-year-old said. "I am finding it difficult to walk, it will take about eight weeks to heal."
Saturday's defeat was Sri Lanka's second successive runners-up finish, having lost to Australia in 2007. They won their first and only World Cup in 1996.
Mathews' next international outing comes when Sri Lanka tour England from May to July to play three Tests and five one-day matches.
