Ponting has scored just 20 runs in three innings against South Africa but has retained his place for the final Test in Perth starting on Friday, and Arthur wants him to be part of the squad for the 2013 Ashes tour.
"At the moment Ricky Ponting has the unanimous backing of the selection panel. We want Ricky Ponting to go to the Ashes, there is no doubt about that," Arthur said.
"We want Ricky Ponting certainly around for the next six months. By his own admission Perth is a big Test for him, but Ricky's prepared brilliantly.
"He will leave no stone unturned in his preparation going into Perth and I'm backing him for a big score."
The 14-man squad for the Perth match sees vice-captain Shane Watson return from injury to replace Rob Quiney, while one of the pace quartet of Mitchell Johnson, John Hastings, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc will deputise for the injured James Pattinson.
There may be other changes after Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus both picked up niggles during the drawn second Test with South Africa in Adelaide.
