With a 3-0 series win already guaranteed, the hosts had the chance to make it four wins this summer after Australia skipper Michael Clarke set them 227 to win in 44 overs.
Pietersen led the chase with a swashbuckling 62 but England were thwarted by the fading light in the end.
"It was good, we had to give it a go today," he told Sky Sports Ashes. "We wanted to entertain, we lost a day's cricket yesterday and that's the brand of cricket this team plays.
"I was in my own bubble, I was just trying to get through certain stages. I had flashbacks of 2005 but the way we played our cricket today it stands us in good stead for the winter.
"I love this ground it's the home of English cricket. Any time you win it's a great feeling."
