Harris will miss the Champions League Twenty20 tournament in India and Australia's one-day tour of India after earlier suggesting he would be happy to play through the pain of the injury he suffered at The Oval.
He was hoping to play for the Brisbane Heat in the September competition but a scan on returning to Australia means a lengthier absence than he had expected.
The 33-year-old was Australia's man of the series in England, claiming 24 wickets at an average of 19.58 runs in four matches.
The reverse Ashes series starts in Brisbane on November 21 and, at the longer end of his potential absence, Harris might only have a couple of weeks to fully prepare for action at the Gabba, which is his home ground.
A Cricket Australia statement read: "Ryan Harris injured his right hamstring during the latter part of the second innings of the fifth Ashes Test. He had to leave the field and did not return to the game as he was unable to bowl.
"He was assessed after arriving back in Australia today and is expected to be unavailable to play for the next six-to-eight weeks."
