The 34-year-old has played 154 ODIs and in the absence of Brendon McCullum and Kyle Williamson he will get the opportunity to captain his country.
McCullum has returned from New Zealand's current tour of Bangladesh in order to prepare for a Test series against the West Indies in December.
Williamson was forced to head home from the sub-continent after breaking a thumb and he too is unavailable for selection.
Top-order batsman Rob Nicol will replace Williamson in the squad, while Andrew Ellis comes in for Ian Butler, who is struggling with a back injury.
New Zealand will play three ODIs and two Twenty20 internationals in Sri Lanka, with the opening ODI taking place in Hambantota on 10 November.
