The keeper, who is hoping to win back his place in the England Test team this summer, played in the opening County Championship match of the season as a batsman and scored a century.
But he has been absent since with an Achilles injury, missing Sussex's last two matches.
Sussex captain Ed Joyce is hoping Prior, Luke Wright and Chris Nash could all return to take on Lancashire, starting on Sunday.
"There is a chance we could have Chris, Luke and Matt back for the next game. It's good to have people coming back and there is pressure for places," Joyce said after his side's innings-and-11-run loss to Somerset.
'Serious injury'
"Matt is coming back from a fairly serious injury. He's trying to make sure when he does come back he can play the game fully, possibly keep wicket and he's trying to get his place back in the Test team."
Prior was dropped from the England team after a poor run with the bat during the Ashes tour of Australia.
He was replaced by Jonny Bairstow but the Yorkshireman is also currently out of action with a broken finger.
Both men need to prove their fitness ahead of the first Test with Sri Lanka on June 12 to have a chance of selection.
