Keith Barker took five wickets before lunch as Warwickshire bossed day one of their County Championship opener against Hampshire at The Ageas Bowl.

Left-armer Barker (5-44) had Michael Carberry (3), Tom Alsop (1) and Will Smith (0) caught out early on before returning to trap Sean Ervine (4) and Liam Dawson (20) lbw shortly before the interval as Warwickshire captain Ian Bell's decision to forego the toss and insert Hampshire paid dividends.

Boyd Rankin's dismissal of James Vince (25) left the hosts reeling on 66-6 at lunch, though their overseas pro, South Africa's Ryan McLaren, displayed some lower-order resistance with a gritty 84 not out as Hampshire battled to 189-8 by the time bad light stopped play in the 76th over.

McLaren shared an eighth-wicket partnership of 51 with new signing Reece Topley (15 from 68 balls) - the latter besting his previous best first-class tally of 12 before being bowled by Chris Woakes - and then added a further 51 with James Tomlinson (15no) during an unbeaten ninth-wicket stand.

Nottinghamshire's Steven Mullaney, meanwhile, clubbed the maiden century of the new season - and the ninth of his first-class career - as his side racked up 446 after being put into bat by Surrey at Trent Bridge.

Mullaney (113 from 114 balls) struck 18 boundaries in his quick-fire knock before snicking Surrey new boy Ravi Rampaul (5-93) - the former West Indies seamer playing for the newly-promoted side as a Kolpak player - into Ben Foakes' gloves midway through the second session.

Samit Patel (85), Riki Wessels (81) and Chris Read (63no) also made Surrey toil, though Tom Curran (3-95) moved past 100 first class scalps in his 25th match and ex-Derbyshire man Mark Footitt (2-98) collected two wickets on his Championship debut for the Oval county.

Surrey openers Rory Burns (4no) and Arun Harinath (3no) then survived a potentially tricky two overs before stumps, Burns cracking seamer Jake Ball to the fence as the away team ended on 7-0.

Durham were also asked to bat by Somerset, ensuring no toss was carried out in each of the Division One games, with Paul Collingwood's men dismissed for 256 in 81.4 overs at Emirates Riverside.

Opener Keaton Jennings top scored for the hosts with 116, while Lewis Gregory (4-58) was the pick of the Somerset attack, taking two wickets in as many balls in the 52nd over, including Collingwood for a golden duck.

Somerset though slipped to 30-3 by the close after Tom Abell (10) and Josh Davey (10) were pinned in front by Chris Rushworth and Marcus Trescothick (3) was bowled by Graham Onions.
