Police are appealing for anyone who may have footage of a crossbow bolt landing on the field of play at The Oval on Thursday to contact them.

The County Championship match between Surrey and Middlesex had to be abandoned, for safety reasons, when the arrow landed on the outfield at around 4.20pm.

The Metropolitan Police says enquiries are ongoing, although the incident is not being treated as terror-related.

Middlesex batsmen John Simpson and Nick Compton, along with Surrey's fielders, were ushered inside by umpires following the incident, while the 1,068 spectators were urged to take cover before armed police carried out a controlled evacuation.

Officers and an armed police response team arrived within 15 minutes and a full search of the ground was carried out by police.

A statement issued by the Met Police on Friday morning said no arrests had yet been made.

It reads: "Detectives from Lambeth are appealing for anyone with footage of the moments up to and including the loose of a crossbow bolt at the Oval to come forward.

"Police were made aware at 16:35 hrs on Thursday, 31 August, of reports that a crossbow bolt had been loosed into the Oval Cricket Ground."

Detective Constable Dominic Landragin of Lambeth CID explained: "There were significant crowds watching the match and it is likely that a number of those present will have footage of the incident that could assist in our investigation.

"Although nobody was injured, this was a reckless action taken with no regard for the safety and well-being of the spectators or the players.

"It is important that we trace those responsible and I urge anyone who has footage of the incident to get in touch as soon as possible.

"As a result of the incident the match being played was suspended and the ground evacuated. There were no reported injuries.

"It is believed that the bolt came from outside of the ground. At this stage, the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.

"Anyone in possession of footage should contact Lambeth CID by dialling 101. To provide information anonymously please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. There have been no arrests and enquiries continue."

And England and Lancashire bowler Jimmy Anderson says he was surprised that such an incident occurred during a County Championship match.

He told Sky Sports News: "Certainly from an international point of view when we tour there is a lot of talk about security.

"And certainly around the Test matches this summer the security has been heightened. It has been visible to see that for the players.

"I think county cricket is probably something where you don't expect that to happen.

"Hopefully, it's just some kids messing around but it's obviously not something you want to see."

A spokesperson for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said: "All the relevant parties are always working closely together to ensure the safety of players, spectators and officials." However, they did not comment on Thursday's incident.

Jimmy Anderson says security around cricket grounds has visibly heightened.

And the English Football League (EFL) have also released a generic statement, which reads: "The EFL is acutely aware of the ever-changing security issues that football and other sporting events currently face and the measures in place remain under constant review to ensure the safety of all those who either participate in or attend our clubs' fixtures as spectators.

"Safety and security protocol on match days is a matter for each individual club, but the EFL met with clubs ahead of the start of the season to provide up-to-date guidance and advice.

"In addition, our security advisor is in regular contact with clubs to offer practical assistance to ensure the appropriate measures are in place to prevent and respond to any potential security risks.

"The EFL continues to work in close collaboration with the police and other partners to ensure football remains a safe and welcoming environment for all."
