Jim Allenby and Stewart Walters cracked half-centuries as the Welsh county defied a five-wicket haul from David Masters to claim at least one batting bonus point.
At one stage Glamorgan reached 104-3 before losing three wickets for 10 runs, Reece Topley dismissing Murray Goodwin for one before getting the well-set Walters (67) caught by Greg Smith on the extra cover boundary.
Masters had home captain Mark Wallace bowled via his pads and Graham Wagg was caught behind off Ravi Bopara attempting to cut shortly before a heavy shower forced the players off the field.
Allenby, though, received some much-needed support from Dean Cosker after the resumption, the pair sharing a 69-run stand for the eighth-wicket.
Bopara eventually ended the alliance when he had Allenby lbw for 77; the Australian-born all-rounder had faced 110 balls during his stay at the crease, hitting nine boundaries.
Masters claimed the remaining two wickets to finish with 5-44, Cosker the last man to fall having batted for over two hours for his 18 runs.
The veteran seamer was back out in the middle after Essex lost Tom Westley to the fourth ball of their innings, the opener bowled shouldering arms to Michael Hogan.
However the nightwatchman couldn't survive through to the close, Hogan again striking when he won an lbw decision at the end of this third over.
