New England captain Joe Root and Test team-mate Jonny Bairstow returned to the Yorkshire side for their Specsavers County Championship trip to the Ageas Bowl, where Hampshire skipper James Vince hit a century.

Vince made 143 not out from 233 balls to lead his side to 281-4 while Ben Coad, Yorkshire's in-form seam prospect, added three more wickets to take his early season tally to 21.

Root was restricted to four overs of off-spin while Bairstow took two catches with the gloves.

A painstaking 66 from Somerset opener Dean Elgar gave his side a slight advantage against a battling Lancashire side at the end of a dramatic opening day at Old Trafford.

The South African battled his way past 151 balls, a number of which were hurled down by an impressive-looking James Anderson and an even better Ryan McLaren, who finished the day with figures of 4-46 as Somerset reached 153-8, giving them a first innings lead of 44 runs.

It could and should have been far better for Tom Abell's men after they removed both Alex Davies and Haseeb Hameed for nought to leave the Red Rose wilting at one for two as James Davey accounted for both openers.

With twin brother Jamie ruled out with a hamstring injury, Craig Overton then removed Luke Procter, Rob Jones and Dean Vilas in quick succession to leave Lancashire struggling on 39-5 and then 42-6 after Tim Groenewald got McLaren.

Stand-in skipper Liam Livingstone was one of only two players to reach double figures, his 68 helping Lancashire to 109 all out.

Ian Westwood hit a defiant century that Warwickshire desperately needed on the opening day of their match with Surrey at Edgbaston.

Former captain Westwood, back in the team after recovering from a broken foot, made 153 out of his side's 292-6.

Surrey's bowlers were no doubt eager to get straight at opposition they skittled for 91 two weeks ago but opening pair Westwood and William Porterfield (45) added 126 before the latter edged Tom Curran to second slip in the last over before lunch.

Jonathan Trott hit three sumptuous fours in a run-a-ball 14 but then edged Curran to Scott Borthwick in the slips.

Westwood and Ian Bell added 79 in 21 overs before Bell (33) fished at one from Mark Footitt and Borthwick accepted another sharp chance.

Sam Robson and Nick Gubbins both underlined their England Test selection credentials by scoring fine hundreds and building a brilliant 241-run opening stand for Middlesex against Essex at Lord's.

Gubbins was finally removed for 101 on the stroke of tea, caught behind pushing forward to Aaron Beard, but Robson remained 144 not out with Middlesex in complete command at 255-1 when bad light brought an early finish to the day's play.

Robson, 27, who played seven Tests in 2014, looked in great touch - especially with his trademark square drives, cuts and flicks off the hip - and could come into England's selection plans again later this summer if he maintains this sort of form.

Gubbins, 23, was close to a senior England winter tour call-up after hitting 1,409 Championship runs at 61.26 last year but had to be content with Lions selection instead when first Haseeb Hameed and later Keaton Jennings were both chosen ahead of him.

It will also have done both players no harm that England opener and former Test captain Alastair Cook is playing in this match and watched from close quarters as they dominated the Essex attack.
