Gale was unbeaten on 159 at the close out of a Yorkshire first-innings total of 358-4, still 85 runs behind.
Gary Ballance also hit a ton, finishing on 103 not out having put on an unbroken 237 with Gale for the fifth wicket.
Phil Jaques was the only wicket to fall all day at North Marine Road, Nottinghamshire spinner Samit Patel (1-89) making the breakthrough shortly before lunch to send the Australian on his way for 51 and reduce Yorkshire to 121-4.
That already represented a recovery for the home side, who started the day on 29-3 in response to Nottinghamshire's 443.
But the remainder of a sun-drenched day by the seaside at North Marine Road belonged to the left-handed duo of Gale and Ballance.
Gale brought up his hundred from 171 balls, including nine fours and a six, and by the close had faced 282 balls and added a further six fours.
Ballance advanced to his second County Championship century of the season late in the day and finished on 103 not out from 217 deliveries, with 14 fours.
